LAOS

Slow rivers

and silent wonder

Laos moves differently. The Mekong sets the pace — wide, unhurried, indifferent to schedules. Luang Prabang is one of the most beautiful towns in Asia, and still largely undiscovered. Come before that changes.

JUST A SMALL GLIMPSE OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE IN LAOS

The alms-giving ceremony at dawn in Luang Prabang

Hundreds of monks in saffron robes moving silently through the morning mist. One of the most profound things you will witness anywhere in Asia — provided you approach it as a guest, not as a photographer.

Two days on a slow boat down the Mekong

No schedule, no itinerary. The river does the navigating. Villages appear and disappear on the banks. Time stops meaning what it usually means, and that is precisely the point.

Kayaking through the limestone gorges of Nong Khiaw

Almost nobody comes here. The river is clear, the cliffs are enormous, and the silence is the kind that you remember for years — not absence of sound, but the presence of something older.

A night in a village with no roads — Muang Ngoi

You arrive by boat. There is no wifi. The guesthouse is wooden, the beds are simple, and the stars are extraordinary. The village has been this way for a long time. You will feel it immediately.

Kuang Si waterfalls — at the right hour

Most tourists arrive at midday. We send you at eight in the morning when the light turns the turquoise pools iridescent and you have them almost entirely to yourself. Timing is everything here.

A Lao cooking class on a family farm

Sticky rice, papaya salad, laap made the way it is actually made — not the tourist version. The meal afterwards, eaten on the ground with the family, is always the best part.
