The mist lifts slowly over the karst peaks. You are the only boat in sight. The cook is already preparing breakfast on the lower deck and the coffee is almost ready. Some mornings in Asia stay with you for the rest of your life. This is one of them.
You leave at first light. The nets go in, the nets come out. A fisherman who has worked these waters his entire life teaches you more about patience than any guidebook ever could. Back on shore, what was caught becomes breakfast.
The most dramatic landscape in Southeast Asia, almost entirely untouched. Rice terraces carved into mountains. Villages where you are likely the first foreigner anyone has seen this week. The road itself — winding, vertiginous, spectacular — is the destination.
The river wakes before you do. Fishermen casting nets in the half-light, water hyacinths drifting past, the smell of coffee from a floating market somewhere nearby. A landscape that has been moving at this pace for a very long time and has no intention of changing.
Dinner is on the floor. There is rice wine that is stronger than it looks. The grandmother speaks no English and manages to tell you everything important anyway. This is the Vietnam that exists between the highlights — and it is the part people remember longest.
When the last tour group has gone and the town belongs again to the river and the people who live beside it, the lanterns do something different. They stop being decorative and start being real. Arrive late. Stay late. It is worth it.
